2. O'CONNOR'S LABOURERS' COTTAGE
From the 1880s onwards, labourers’ cottages such as this one were built throughout Ireland in order to improve the living conditions of farm labourers. A small plot of land was usually attached to the cottage, which allowed the labourer to grow enough potatoes and other vegetables to support his
family.
Internally the cottage contains a kitchen living area and two small bedrooms. There is also another sleeping area overhead.

The term ‘cottage’ was traditionally applied exclusively to a dwelling built for a farm labourer. The term was never applied to other dwellings, no matter how humble or small.
