Mining

• The oldest known copper mine in north west Europe is located at Ross Island near Ross Castle.

• Copper was mined at Ross Island around 4,000 years ago.

​

• Mining also occurred on the Muckross Peninsula 4,000 years ago.

​

• During the Industrial Revolution mining contributed significantly to the Muckross and Kenmare Estates and also to Killarney town itself.

​

• Abandoned mine shafts in KNP are now home to hibernating Bat species.
