Killarney National Park:

Kerry Cattle

  • We have a native breed of Kerry cattle in KNP.

​

  • Introduced by the Celts (Celtic shorthorn) brought to Ireland as early as 2000 BC.

​

  • The first breed to be developed for quality milk production.

​

  • Believed to be related to the Here, a small black cow of the high Alps and also related to the fierce black bull of the Camargue.

​

  • We have over 100 Kerry cattle in KNP.

​

  • The Kerry herd are used as a grazing tool to establish species rich sward in our meadows including: Yellow rattle, Yarrow, Harebell, Wild Lupine, Red clover,  Bladder Campion, Meadowsweet, Cowslip, Lady’s Bedstraw, Cuckoo Flower, Quaking Grass, Birdsfoot Trefoil, Cornflower, Ragged Robin.
