Killarney National Park:
Kerry Cattle

We have a native breed of Kerry cattle in KNP.

Introduced by the Celts (Celtic shorthorn) brought to Ireland as early as 2000 BC.

The first breed to be developed for quality milk production.
​

Believed to be related to the Here, a small black cow of the high Alps and also related to the fierce black bull of the Camargue.

We have over 100 Kerry cattle in KNP.
​

The Kerry herd are used as a grazing tool to establish species rich sward in our meadows including: Yellow rattle, Yarrow, Harebell, Wild Lupine, Red clover, Bladder Campion, Meadowsweet, Cowslip, Lady’s Bedstraw, Cuckoo Flower, Quaking Grass, Birdsfoot Trefoil, Cornflower, Ragged Robin.
