1. KISSANES' FARMHOUSE

This dwelling represents the home of a farmer with a small holding of approximately 20 acres.

The dwelling is rectangular in shape and is divided internally into two rooms, a kitchen and a bedroom. Each room occupies the full width of the structure; there is no connecting hall or passageway.

There are no ceilings. Instead, a layer of sod is visible directly overhead. Originally this provided a bed to which an outer layer of thatch was pinned. Later, when the thatch was replaced by corrugated iron, the sod layer was retained as insulation.

The large kitchen hearth provides the only means of cooking and of heating water. Instead of a fire crane, the hearth is fitted with a hanging chain for suspending the pots over the fire.

The large wooden settle-bed served as a seat by day but could be opened out to provide an
additional sleeping area.
