3. FOLEYS' FARMHOUSE

This farmhouse represents the home of a farmer with a land holding of between 40 and 50 acres. The outhouses run parallel with the rear wall of the structure, an arrangement typical of west Munster.

The farmhouse is rectangular in shape and is divided into three rooms internally, a central kitchen with a bedroom at either end. Each room occupies the full with of the structure and leads directly from one to another. There is no connecting hall or passageway.

A layer of sod is visible directly overhead; there are no ceilings. The external thatch is pinned to the sod layer. The external half door allowed the maximum amount of light to enter the dark interior. It also served to keep young children in and animals and fowl out.

The large kitchen hearth is fitted with a fire crane for suspending cooking pots over the fire. This was the only means of cooking and of heating water. Traditionally, a visitor was always seated closest to the fire as a matter of courtesy.
